I thought I had finished painting the New Mexico landscapes but there is still more! I wanted to paint a triptych depicting a close view of the mesa wall, or cliff. It is oil on panel and I am very pleased with the result and also framed the original large drawing for this piece.  Also in the new show are 2 more oil on panel single pieces.

These pieces are still “about” landscape but become more abstract while still showing discernible forms.

I used tons of burnt sienna and naples yellow, also some yellow ochre and burnt umber. That was the palette for the whole series.

I’ve got 15 – New Mexico – pieces ready to hang. We  will hang the show on October 2nd at the Community House in the village. I will be having another show in May at the hospital in Northampton – that is quite a good sport. May be the same work, depends what I produce over the winter. . . . and what I sell meanwhile (fingers crossed!).

You can see some of the work in the Sept 2nd post – Art from New Mexico.

After our – quite short – visit to New Mexico in June I have been painting all summer. I had made plenty of sketches on the spot so I had lots to work from. I am more convinced that ever about the value of keeping a sketchbook. Photographs are great for reference but they don’t capture the immediacy of the encounter between artist and landscape (mine don’t anyway!)

These are oil on paper. I worked a lot with oil sticks – sometimes called oil bars. These are solid oil paint, like big crayons. Actually it is like crayoning on the walls!

These pieces will be having their first showing in October at our local Community House Gallery and then in the spring down in Northampton. I am really excited about this work which seems to have taken me in a really new direction. The colours of the high desert, the dryness of the land, the amazing rock formations really left me speechless. I think I will go back there!

This winter is proving to be a very long and snowy one here in New England.  I have been working in my studio using sketches, memory and photos. Currently I am working in oils creating a landscape from photos of the Mawddach estuary – a favourite place to walk when we are at home. I love the big horizontal sweeps of the bright green grass and the water as the tide changes. I have 3 versions coming along concurrently. I will post the finished version when  I get it done. Actually I am pleased with the way this is coming along. These are all oil on paper which will then be adhered to a panel. This is a fairly conventional approach to landscape and very different from my  usual abstract work.

Here are a couple of images of the works in progress:   Let me know what you think!

Mawdach Trail 1

The old railway bed has been made into a path for walkers and cyclists. It is a lovely, level walk and the views in all directions as you walk along that curve are beautiful!

Finally got the Junk Art up at Elmers last Friday, with help from Lucy. The people there very relaxed and told me just to bang nails in the (wooden) wall wherever I wanted! It looks really good, Reception was yesterday afternoon and I really didn’t expect anyone to come so took my knitting and book …but lots of friends and contacts turned up and liked the show and were interested to meet each other too.

Installation at Elmers Store November 2010

Individual images can be seen below in the April 9th entry.

Also present was my Bookworm sculpture, created from discarded library books, a vacuum cleaner hose,  tennis ball, newspaper, string, shredded paper. The Bookworm had to be removed after the reception as there is no room there for a free standing work. However, it has been donated to the Greenfield Community College library and will be placed there when the library moves into its new space….soon I hope!

Art Show at Cooley Dickinson Hospital May 11, 2010

The hospital has a different artist showing every month. I took a couple of photos. Quite a challenge as it is a long wide corridor and impossible to get the whole installation in one shot. It took me four hours to hang all 26 pieces so they looked really good!

Since the work is non-representational, people tend to have a lot of questions about what it means, what I was thinking about etc etc. I used to think I “ought” to provide answers to these kind of questions but now mostly let people tell me what they think it is all about!

Installation of the show at CDH Gallery

I will include all the images as thumbnails on a separate page once I figure out how to do that! Well – I did that, so now you can see a slide show of all 22 small landscapes.
